"Invisible" Hearing Aids

It frequently happens that a patient requests an “invisible” hearing aid. While most hearing aid manufacturers love to market invisible hearing aids, the unfiltered truth is that these products are not invisible where they sit in the ear, no matter how deep an ear canal impression is taken. For many years we have used Bernafon and Oticon as manufacturers of choice for their Invisible-In-Canal small hearing aids. These battery-operated hearing aids work well, have a decent life expectancy and can indeed sit really deep and hardly visible in most patient's ear canals. We still stand by these Danish products and are fitting these today with high success in terms of user outcomes. Additionally, Phonak (the Swiss hearing aid maker) has an approach that seems to give a smaller, deep-fitting and durable miniature in-the-canal hearing aid. Meet the Phonak Virto Titanium In-The-Canal tailored hearing aid. Our experience is that the titanium walls allow for a thinner shell than a typical acrylic hearing aid. The thinner shell translates into a smaller device which thus can sit deeper in the narrowing canal. While not invisible, it’s certainly the least visible option for day-use hearing aids. PENINSULA HEARING offers a no-money down thirty day trial on these amazingly sophisticated little machines by either Phonak, Oticon or Bernafon (our recommended Swiss and Danish manufacturers for small in-the-ear devices).
The process would typically look something like this.
First appointment: one hour, hearing assessment, ear canal cleaning, a screen for medical contraindications and an impression of the ear canal and concha bowl taken.
Second appointment: one hour; fitting and verification of the Titanium in-the-canal hearing aids. This begins the thirty day free wear period.
Third appointment: thirty minutes; one week follow-up to review volume, settings and user preferences.
Fourth, fifth and sixth appointments: fifteen to thirty minutes each, weekly follow-ups to review volume, settings and user preferences. Cleaning and maintenance strategies are taught.
In summary, a commitment of three to four hours over a period of six weeks would allow anybody living in Surrey or White Rock this opportunity to try the only titanium “invisible” in-the-canal hearing aids on the market today.
